*Note: I received a review copy from NetGalley)
Sooo I have been seeing this book posted everywhere, and I was intrigued by the cover, and I’ll be honest, not so much the plot.
A summary: Marisa Palmera never meant to catch her best friend’s boyfriend cheating. But when she does, an old frenemy, Kendall, catches wind and recruits her to follow her own boyfriend TJ around. As Marisa and TJ start to get close, she realizes that taking this job will open a can of worms she can’t close.’
Rating: 3.5-4/5 stars
Now, I didn’t hate this book. The writing, the voice, characterization, all of it is perfect and wonderful and honestly redeemed the book. The plot was just not my cup of tea, but it could be for some people.
And I loved some of the characters. I’m a sucker for good friendships/sibling relationships, and this one had both. Nick and Charlie were honestly so good to Marisa, even when I felt like slapping the girl, and I wish I had (and I probably do) have people like that in my corner.
Marisa’s also an amazing character. She’s hilariously (and relatably) awkward, strong-willed, stubborn, and caring. She gives people chances, and while some may paint that as weak or crazy, it’s still an admirable trait among those of us who hold grudges (guilty). Did I necessarily agree with every choice she made? Of course not. But her decisions and her priorities (college, boys, friends, etc) were so annoyingly real. Like it was annoying to read how boy crazy she is, but I also can’t be mad because lots of girls are actually like that.
On the other hand, we have literally the worst character ever. And I’m not sure if I hate her because she’s badly written or because she’s that well-written. But she’s tenacious. A mega ultra bitch queen that would sooner sell you out than be your friend. God, she pissed me off.
My major turn-off from this book (aside from Kendall) was just that it became a clusterfuck of drama. Like the kind of crap you’d see on ABC Family (Freeform(?)) and not in a good way. Idk what kind of high school y’all go to, but shit like what happened in this book definitely ain’t realistic, and the drama goes to the freaking extreme.
And what’s with all the girl hate? Literally all of them are at each other’s throats when, in my opinion, it’s always the men that are trash (LITERAL CHEATERS HELLO)
Another thing that kinda made me not respect this book as much was the amount of NONCONSENSUAL KISSING. Yes, like the type where the characters are arguing and the guy kisses the girl to shut her up. Not cool. #consentismandatory
It sounds like I hate this book, and I don’t, but I definitely won’t be purchasing my own copy or buying it for anything else. I am not bashing the author. I think the author is extremely articulate and talented; this just wasn’t for me.
